Lawrence Eckerling comes to the Evanston Symphony Orchestra after just concluding a sixteen year tenure as Music Director and Conductor of the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra in Minnesota. Prior to that position which he began in 1986, he served as Assistant Conductor to the Omaha Symphony, and as Music Director and Conductor of the Omaha Area Youth Orchestras. In 1980 he founded the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra of Chicago which performed a series of free Music Performance Trust Fund Concerts.
Eckerling's local guest conducting engagements have included the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Park Ridge Symphony Orchestra , the Lake Shore Symphony Orchestra and the Kankakee Symphony Orchestra. Other guest conducting engagements have included the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra in Minneapolis, Opera Omaha, the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, and the Germantown Symphony in Memphis.
Beginning his piano studies at the age of six at the Northwestern University School of Music’s “Primary Piano Department”, Eckerling remains an active pianist. His piano engagements have included performances of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra and with the Mount Prospect(Ill.) Community Band. He has performed regularly with the Chicago-based Duetri Ensemble, appeared on the “Live From Landmark” Minnesota Public Radio series, and was an annual performer at the Central Minnesota Music school “ Soiree” fundraising event.
Eckerling received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education (both instrumental and choral music) at Indiana University in Bloomington. He earned his Masters Degree in Orchestral and Opera Conducting from the same institution.
Eckerling is also active in the jazz and pop fields. As leader of the Lake Forest Synthesizer Duo between 1984 and 1992, he has presented more than 500 educational concerts in schools throughout the region. And since 1984 as leader of “Larry Eckerling & His Orchestra”, he has presented live music from classical music to rock and roll for private functions throughout the Chicago area.
Born in Chicago, Eckerling grew up in Skokie, and makes his home in Glenview, Illinois with his wife Sharon, and his son, Jeremy.
